The Fact People

A running roll call of the writers, journalists, and pundits doing the work of keeping us grounded in what's actually true.

Fact-checking sites:
These sites investigate widely circulated claims and determine how well they match the available evidence. They focus on rumors, viral social-media posts, political claims, scams, urban legends, manipulated images and quotations, and other possible misinformation.

Image origin search:

These sites are good at detecting misrepresented or altered existing photographs. They are less useful when an image is completely new—such as a newly generated AI image. They can reveal several kinds of deception:

  • An image claimed to be from a recent event may appear online years earlier.
  • The original may show that part of the photograph was cropped out.
  • An older, unedited version may reveal that something was added or removed.
  • The image may come from a completely different location or event.

Fake video/audio/image detection:
These free sites have a fairly good record at determining if video, images, or audio is fake or not. They are not perfect (but no fake detection system is perfect).
TrueMedia Deep-o-meter Deepware Scanner Hive Detect
Fake image detection:
These free tools examine a single image for signs of manipulation or AI generation — inconsistent lighting and noise, edited regions, and telltale artifacts. Useful for images that never existed before, which reverse image search can't find.
Forensically DeepAI Fake Image Detector
Fake audio detection:
These free tools analyze a voice recording for signs that it was synthesized or cloned rather than spoken by a real person. Like all detectors they are imperfect, and short or low-quality clips are the hardest to judge.
